Super City for Bay of Plenty a possibility

Sweeping local government reforms, expected to be announced this week, could lead to the creation of a super council for the entire Bay of Plenty. Tauranga Mayor Stuart Crosby is hoping for an announcement that would pave the way for a single unitary authority for the Bay, including the functions of the Bay of Plenty Regional Council. The prospect of a super council has been discussed informally by the region's six mayors ever since the creation of Auckland's Super City, and Mr Crosby hoped the reforms to be announced by Local Government Minister Nick Smith would remove obstacles to amalgamation.

Tourism champion passes away

Neville Lobb, one of New Zealand’s pioneer tourism boosters, died in Tauranga on 22DEC, aged 91. Founder of Rotorua’s famed Polynesia Spa
attraction, Mr Lobb was the first person to head the National Travel Association, forerunner to the Travel Industry Federation.

Adrenalin Forest opens in BoP

The Bay of Plenty has a new high wire adventure activity, Adrenalin Forest, which has launched its operations amongst the tall timbers of the TECT – All Terrain Park on Pyes Pa Road, mid-way between Tauranga and Rotorua. Featuring rope swings, flying foxes and log walks suspended up to 20m above the ground, the course is designed to excite and challenge everyone with an adventurous spirit.

Camping at its best

Waihi Beach Top 10 Holiday Resort has been awarded Business of the Year in the 2011 Tauranga Westpac Business Awards. The resort is on DoC land and has seen many leaseholders come and go. None have been as ambitious and committed as Ian and Vicki Smith, who bought the business in 1996.
